Yesterday was a very full and exciting day. The rescue boats were launched and the hull of the Golden Bear was painted. Shortly after the lunch hour and Quarters we all participated in the Fire and Boat Drill. Yesterday I showed photos of the rescue boats and painting. Today will be the drill.
The general alarm bell rings continuously and the ship’s whistle sounds continuously for more than ten seconds. Cadets and crew report to their stations, lifejackets and hard hats on.
Ready at the lifeboat station.
A cadet climbs the stairs on his way to report “all accounted for” to the Bridge. The rescue boat crew stand by in case the rescue boat needs launching.
A “simulated fire” has been reported in the Bos’n’s paint locker. Firefighters are assisted into their gear.
Knee pads for crawling on the deck to keep low out of the smoke.
Checking the air.
Axe ready in case there are any doors that need to be smashed down.
Adjusting the fire hose nozzle.
Cadet Raul Lopez Rodriguez brings extra air tanks.
Down the stairs.
Back up the stairs, carrying a victim (Mate Nicholas Shields) to safety and fresh air. He is placed on the deck to await medical attention.
These are the medics……
…..more medics with Dr.Charles Maletz and Nurse Carole McClain. I was not there when the medics transported Mate Shields back to the clinic. I was down with the “fire”.
On the deck- low checking the door to the Bos’ns office.
Notice the “smoke” coming out of the door.
This smoke is produced by a fog machine.
This is your visual inside the room. The simulation is pretty realistic.
Fire drill is called. Putting back a fire extinguisher.
Getting ready to leave.
Another group of firefighters were in the upper mess (for containment) so the fire would not spread to that area.
Putting away the fire hose (Cadet Ty Nausid).
